We've said the AFL views player autonomy a little differently...

...but if you want proof, here's a good start on the summary of the NAB-sponsored (!) AFL trading period which just ended today (which is now yesterday in Australia...time zones, check'm out...). Ryan Griffin said he wanted to leave the Western Bulldogs and go to the Giants; Tom Boyd said he was sick of living in Greater Western Sydney and wanted to move from the Giants to the Bulldogs; therefore, the two teams were virtually REQUIRED to work out a trade for these two star players, REGARDLESS of the fact that they each desperately wanted to keep their own star. No matter. You must fulfill the wishes of the player, even if he's under contract. Completely ludicrous, but it's an interesting lesson for those in America who wonder about how "free" our free agency should be...

AFL Trade Period - winners and losers

(And we love the fact that the trade period is sponsored! NAB sponsors all the off-season activities of the AFL - the trade period, the drafts (plural!), the pre-season... Remember, this is a semi-European culture where the teams wear their sponsors logos on their uniforms and NOT the team names!)
