We mentioned yesterday that the leading receiver for Boise was out for the season - here's a piece via Dr. Saturday and the Idaho Statesman for those who hadn't followed up on the story. With the best winning record in the 21st century among FBS football programs, Boise fans are already in panic mode having lost twice in the same season (Chris Petersen's record there was an even 90% wins, as unbelievable as that sounds); this will put some of them in complete free-fall:
Dr. Saturday - Matt Miller's college career is over
Bryan Harsin had some gargantuan shoes to fill when he took over for his old boss as head coach on the blue turf of Boise State. Here are some of the amazing numbers that fail to describe the incredibly honest, ethical, and self-effacing role model Chris Peterson was as coach of the Broncos:
As the BSU offensive coordinator: 53 wins, 11 losses under Dan Hawkins (winning percentage of .828)
As the BSU Head coach: Won his first 14 games, including the 2007 Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma, 43-42 in OT (likely you've heard of that one!). In his second season, a loss at Hawaii (in their 12-0 BCS Buster year) knocked them into a 10-3 season. In 2010, Boise again won the Fiesta Bowl as a WAC team, beating TCU 17-10, and producing the second-ever 14-win season in Division 1A.
In his five years in the WAC, Dan Hawkins went 37-3, better than any coach in fifty years. In his five years in the WAC, Chris Petersen went 38-2.
His first seven years produced a win-loss record of 84-8. Twelve wins a year. 91.3% winning percentage. It dropped with a "disasterous" four loss season before he moved to take over the Washington Huskies program this year, where he's 5-1 already.
We used to complain that if Petersen ever left Boise, we'd quit watching college football. Guess we were wrong about that..but as Idahoans, we sure miss him as a person as much as a coach.
