Prophecies, part two...

Here are the college football PROPHECIES for All Hallow’s Eve …

BIG GAMES in the FBS) There are five by our count:

Florida v Georgia (+2.5) – the World’s Largest Cocktail party is more important than usual, because it will have a HUGE impact on which team carries the olive at the end of the year! Florida’s 4-1, Georgia’s 3-2. Everyone else has three losses in conference. When Florida wins and covers, they’ll have a berth in the SEC title game all but wrapped up!

North Carolina @ Pitt (+3) – Two of the three undefeateds in conference play in the ACC Atlantic division, along with Duke. The winner here has a clear leg up, and we see Pitt pulling the upset, as three of our metrics (including our own Following Football tier system) agree.

Stanford @ Washington St (+13.5) – If Wazzu wins, they’re tied with the Cardinal and have the tiebreaker. WHEN Stanford wins by LESS than 13.5, they’ll have two games clear on the field and the Pac-12 North sewn up.

Notre Dame @ Temple (+9) – on a dare, we’ll take Temple to keep it closer than nine. Call it motivation. IF the Rockets should win, expect a vault up the rankings for not just them but all four AAC undefeateds.

Louisiana Tech @ Rice (+13) – for control of Conference USA West (along with Southern Miss, each has just one loss). The point spread is too close to call, but LaTech should indeed win by about two touchdowns.

BIG GAMES in the FCS) We see six of them that could possibly decide conference titles:

Dartmouth @ Harvard – This is the BIGGEST one! Both ranked top ten, Harvard’s been on top for years but Big Green’s been gaining…and now, the Dartmouth Defense thinks it can stop the high-powered Crimson offense. They’re wrong. Harvard by 10+ points. (Remember, there are no Vegas spreads in the FCS, so we create our own.)

Jacksonville @ Dayton – the two “least weak” teams in the Pioneer League pillow fight it out! If Dayton wins, they’ll stay unbeaten and have wins over their two biggest threats, J-ville and San Diego. If they lose, well, it’s a four-way tie at the top. At Dayton, we’ll take the Flyers to win, and that’s as much as we can ask. Gonna be a close game!

Colgate @ Fordham – very similar to its cousin in the Ivy League, the Patriot League also pairs its two remaining unbeaten this week in a showdown essentially for the title. Fordham’s been dominant all season long – we’ll call them 10+ point winners here, too.

Eastern KY @ Jacksonville St – Along with Eastern Illinois (whom JSU plays next week), two of the three unbeaten play their round-robin starting this week. If JSU can handle Auburn into a second overtime, they can sure handle EKU by a touchdown or more.

James Madison @ William & Mary – A week ago, this might have been a classic…now, with JMU’s QB out for the season, it’s the Cowboys all over again: William & Mary wins comfortably.

Coastal Carolina @ Charleston Southern – CSU’s won five in a row, and sits 3-0 in conference. Coastal is 7-0, ranked first in some polls, and obviously also unbeaten in conference. Saturday, they meet for the Big South title, for all intents and purposes. We’ll take the visitors, as tempting as it is to take the home crowd and all. Coastal’s got it all rolling this year.

OK…here are the other games of interest throughout the nation this weekend, and our picks on most of them:
Michigan @ Minnesota (+13.5) – With Jerry Kill’s retirement today, here’s betting the Gophers play their hearts out for him Saturday. Gophers cover.
Oklahoma St @ Texas Tech (+3) – OSU should be able to handle the Red Raiders fairly comfortably. Cowboys cover.
West Virginia @ TCU (-14) Thursday night – Something says this game will be closer than we think. All the metrics say 9-13 points, and the injuries are starting to catch up to both TCU and Baylor, and we think the title will head north into the state of OK somewhere…
USC @ Cal-Berkeley (+6) – They felt embarrassed at UCLA; they will NOT be embarrassed to the rich kids! Cal covers the six points.
Oregon @ Arizona St (-2) Thursday night – If you think the Sun Devils are going to win, might as well take the two points as well! Odds of a one point win are slim…
Ole Miss @ Auburn (+7) – Only interesting because it’s an SEC West battle, and all seven teams there are amazing. We like Auburn to keep it close.
South Florida @ Navy (-7.5) – there’s a LOT more than a touchdown between these teams. Navy by double that.
Florida International @ Florida Atlantic (+3.5) – bonus points if you can name what city either team is located in! (Neither can we.) FIU is decent; the Owls are not. FIU despite the points.
San Diego St @ Colorado St (+4.5) – We started the season saying that the entire Mountain division was better than the West, and that any of the best four teams (AF, CSU, USU, and Boise) could win the West easily. If that’s still true, the Rams win this game outright, even if the Aztecs are the class of the West (and they are!).
Idaho @ New Mexico St (+4.5) – Two rivalry games to finish this section: the Vandals and the Aggies had to roam the wastelands together when the WAC gave up football and no one else would take them. (Remember the season – 2010? – when the proposal was twelve games of Idaho v NMSU, six at each school?) What would you think about Idaho winning three in a row? (They hadn’t won two straight since 2011.) Take the Vandals to win by more than 5.
Louisiana Monroe @ Louisiana-Lafayette (-11.5) – The latter school tries to just call itself “Louisiana” now, but it seems a shame to kill the connection betwixt the schools. Like FIU changing to “The International” or something. But this line seems like it’s about right – no pick ATS from us; just confirmation that ULL should win by 11 or so.

AND, here are some of the interesting games in the FCS this weekend…
Indiana St @ Illinois St (no Vegas lines, of course) – Take Illinois St by at least 17 points.
Weber St @ Eastern Washington – EWU by 15+ “on the red”.
Montana @ Portland St – Sorry, Mr. Clixby and Grandpa Mike…Portland St by at least seven.
Maine @ Villanova – The Wildcats are better than everyone else except the top three in the Colonial… Villanova by 7+.
Monmouth @ Kennesaw St – The newcomers are 6-2, albeit against flimsy competition, but that’s fine for a team playing its first year of football EVER! However, we think Monmouth will win this one.
Western Carolina @ Chattanooga – almost put this in the BIG game section, but I don’t see WCU challenging Chattanooga, who should win by 13 or more.
Furman @ Samford – hate picking Southern Conference games! They always seem to go sideways on us! But we’ll try taking Samford by, say, at least five here…
Wofford @ VMI – …and Wofford by a TD or more over the team that won its first road conference game in three years last week!
Butler @ Marist – Close in every metric we use, but Marist comes out on top in every metric, too. Marist by 3.
Sacred Heart @ St. Francis-PA – St. Francis should hold on to this one at home.
Pennsylvania @ Brown – The undercard to Dartmouth/Harvard in the Ivy League this week should see Brown win a close one.
Alcorn St @ Southern – the two division champs from last year in the SWAC meet, and we’ll take a narrow Jaguar victory for Southern.
Alabama State v Alabama A&M meet in a neutral site game in Birmingham, and we’ll take State by three.
Norfolk St @ NC Central – two closely matched MEAC teams, with NCC destined to win by three.
Last but certainly least, Savannah St @ Howard, a matchup of two of the worst HBC teams of 2015 (or most any other year), and we’re of course obliged to pick against Savannah State, selecting Howard to win by six!

Do we need to give you our picks for ALL the other games? Sigh… All right… Hang on…

Take VT (-2.5) over BC, Clemson (-10) over NCState, Louisville (-12) over Wake, GT (-5.5) over UVA, Iowa (-17) over Maryland, Purdue (+10.5) covers over Nebraska, Wisc (-19) over Rutgers, Texas (-7) over Iowa St, Utah (-23.5 and still mad) over OSU, UCLA (-20.5) over Colorado, Tenn (-7.5) over KY, Tx A&M (-15) over SoCarolina, Arkansas by 25 over UT-Martin (no line), Houston (-13) over Vandy, UCF (+25) covers over Cincy, Tulsa (-3) over SMU, Marshall (-20) over Charlotte, WKU (-23) over ODU, NoTexas (+9.5) covers over UTSA, UTEP (+22.5) covers against USM, all the favorites in the MAC cover, Air Force (-7.5) covers against Hawaii, Boise (-20) covers at UNLV, USU (-24) over Wyoming, App St (-23) over Troy, and GASO (-21) over Texas St. Lots of favorites covering this week. If we didn’t name the game, we’re not picking a side against the spread, but we like the favorite to win.

In the FCS… winners in the MVC will be SDSU, NDSU, Northern Iowa and Western Illinois; in the Big Sky, we like SUU, MSU, Northern Arizona; in the Colonial, we’ll take Richmond, New Hampshire, Towson, and Stony Brook; in the Southland, we like McNeese, Central Ark, Lamar, NW St, SHSU and SFA; Presbyterian in the Big South; ETU and Citadel in the Southern; Duquesne, CCSU in the NEC; Tenn St, EIU, and SEMO in the Ohio Valley; Campbell, San Diego, and Drake in the Pioneer; Yale and Princeton in the Ivy; Bucknell and Lehigh and HC in the Patriot; BCU, NCAT, and SC State in the MEAC; and JSU and Prairie View in the SWAC.

Happy trails!

Speaking of college football, how about a few early predictions?

While here at Following Football:ACNC we don't rank our teams early so as not to bias ourselves against what we see, there's nothing to stop us from guessing how things are going to turn out! So, holding back the right to adjust these predictions as circumstances warrant until the season actually starts in September, here are some thoughts as they pertain to the actual conference races this fall...

Atlantic Coast Conference:
- The winner of the Florida St @ Clemson game wins the ACC title. (We bet Clemson.)
- Louisville 3rd and NC St 4th in the Atlantic; everyone else is putrid.
- Flip a coin between Miami, Georgia Tech, and Va-Tech for the Coastal crown...
-...we're taking Miami in an upset right now.
- Duke will still be good; just not AS good. 4th place.
- Since UNC goes TO Pitt, we'll take Pitt for 5th and the Tar Heels 6th.
- It'll be Al Golden's last year at Virginia, as they finish 7th in the Coastal division.

The B1G (the Big Ten, which of course has 14 teams):
- Ohio State is as good as they say. Undefeated season going into the CFP.
- Michigan State would be champs except for the Buckeyes.
- Penn St gets the Wolverines at home, so they get 3rd and Harbaugh gets 4th.
- The rest of the division is bad. Take Rutgers, Maryland, and Indiana in that order.
- Take Minnesota for the West Division! They get BOTH Wisc and Neb at home!
- Wisconsin will be ready to pounce on another division crown if the Gophers fail.
- Nebraska third, and nobody close behind them.
(But plan on Iowa, NW, Illinois, and terrible Purdue if you have to.)

The XII (the Big Twelve, which of course has 10 teams):
- TCU all the way, including a pounding of Baylor in Fort Worth and a trip to the CFP.
- The rest of the real class in the XII is Baylor and OU, who we see 2nd and 3rd.
- There's a logjam for mediocrity, which we're deciphering as Texas, K-St, OSU, and WVU.
- The bottom of the conference is still poor. Tech 8th, ISU 9th, KU 10th.

The Pac-12 Conference:
- Two tight races at the top: we'll flip a coin down south and say UCLA has the slightly easier road.
- Up north, we've a hunch that it's finally Stanford's year to get through OU to the CFP!
- The four other good teams in the conference are Arizona, Utah, Cal, and ASU. In that order.
- UW might join them, but let's see them against Boise St first. If they win there, then yes.
- Wazzu and Oregon St may have some chances to at least go to a bowl.
- Colorado definitely does NOT.

The Southeastern Conference:
- We're staying with 'Bama until they prove us wrong. Division, conference, CFP.
-...but LSU and Auburn are good choices, too, should "In Saban we trust" falter.
- 4th/5th is tight between Ole Miss and Arkansas; their game is in Mississippi, so we take the Rebels.
- 6th/7th would be 1st/2nd in most conferences. Here, it's placing Miss St in the cellar because A&M wins in Texas.
- Georgia's the only team in the Eastern Division that would have a chance in the West.
- The other six will go winless against the West. Book it!
- Vanderbilt will be last. But I'd prefer to school there than any of the other SEC schools.
- Spots 2-6 may be a five way tie at 3-5, but we'll say: UK, Mizzou, USC, FLA, and UT.

So to recap: The College Football Playoff should be TCU, Ohio St, Stanford, and 'Bama.
The Power Five Bottom Five (we're splitting it up this year!) may start with Vandy, Kansas, Colorado, Purdue, and Wake Forest. The Group of Five conferences are next.

Is it too early to talk Top 30 in college football?

Yes. Yes it is.

However, Sports Illustrated doesn't think so, and they've put out their "post-spring camp Top 25" plus five more, and it's an interesting list to peruse...

1. Ohio State                                       11. Stanford                                           21. Georgia Tech
2. Baylor                                              12. Ole Miss                                          22. Oklahoma
3. Auburn                                            13. Arizona                                            23. BYU
4. Alabama                                          14. USC                                                  24. LSU
5. Michigan St                                    15. Boise State                                      25. Oklahoma St
6. TCU                                                  16. Clemson                                          26. Arkansas
7. Notre Dame                                    17. Missouri                                          27. Utah
8. UCLA                                               18. Georgia                                           28. Mississippi St
9. Florida St                                        19. Arizona St                                       29. Texas
10. Oregon                                           20. Wisconsin                                      30. Michigan

I find this list absolutely fascinating to contemplate, which is why I post it. At Following Football, we do NOT rank football teams until somewhen in mid-October at the earliest. What we do do is group teams into what we call "tiers"; eventually there'll be about twenty tiers, A through T or so, even when they're ranked (that's also how we project game outcomes) but at the very beginning of the season? We'll divide them up into two, three, four tiers...then six or seven...then maybe eight or ten..until we have enough information to rank them all, #1-127. (UAB football, rest in peace.)

But about THIS list? Look at these crunchy tidbits!
> Auburn 3 and Alabama 4? Delicious!
> OSU deserves #1, but MSU isn't very far behind at #5...
> Baylor at 2 and TCU way back at 6? But TCU's the one bringing their QB back!
> How about this one? Everett Golson goes to perennial playoff contender Florida St, #9... but the team he left is #7!
> Look at the Pac-12! UCLA #8, Oregon #10, Stanford #11, Arizona #13, USC #14, and Arizona State at #19! (Even Utah sneaking in at 27!) THAT will be a packed conference!
> The "Group of Five" better figure out a way to defeat Boise State! They start the season ranked this year...even a loss or two may not knock them out of the top non-Power spot! (Only BYU sits on the list, at #23, to challenge.)
> Oklahoma 22 and Okee State 25? Fun!
> Arkansas 26 and Texas 29? (Or OU/UT? Or...)
> And look who they've got sneaking in at #30! High hopes, indeed, Mr. Harbaugh!

Now, if the predictions hold true, we'll be previewing the Oregon/Alabama national championship game on January 12th in the new year. And remember, not only will we be tallying our Following Football predictions compared to that of the casinos, but also running a pure count of how many games each of the four predictors does forecasting 39 games where the teams have had a month to both rust and prepare.

From John Ireland: an explanation of college football.

John Ireland@LAIreland

USC is doing to Notre Dame what UCLA did to USC, which is what Stanford did to UCLA. And USC beat Stanford. College FB never makes sense

What games are on tap for Week 12?

Of the sixty FBS games this week, the Las Vegas/Reno casino bookies, the folks who make their living by predicting the (perceived!) outcome of the games agreed with the predictions we made based on the tiered rankings we posted on Sunday.

For the record, we predict the outcome of games as follows: Count the number of tiers that the two teams differ by. So, for example, if one team is Tier B and the other is Tier G, there is a five tier difference (C, D, E, F, G) between them. Then, multiply that by 1 1/2 points for the neutral field advantage the higher team would have. Finally, give the home team an extra three points (if they're favored already, add three to the spread; if they're the underdog, subtract three). There's your prediction. (We've been known to adjust for unusual circumstances: when BYU lost their all-star QB, for example, the tiers had not adjusted for that at the time. Similarly, there might be motivating factors - rivalries, etc. - that urge us to change the spread - but we rarely do! More often than not, what you see is what you get...WYSIWYG!

Here are the games that have a significant difference between our forecasts and theirs:

UMass @ Akron Tuesday ... we say Akron by 3, they say by 7 1/2. They win. Akron 30, UMass 6.
Kansas St @ West Virginia Thursday...we say K-St by 1, they say WV by 2 1/2! Our point! K-St 26, WVU 20.
UTEP @ Rice Friday...we say Rice wins by 2, they say Rice by 9. They lead 2-1. Rice wins big, 31-13.
Fordham @ Army Saturday...no forecast from Vegas because Fordham's an FCS school, but we believe they should be favored over Army by a point! Army 42-31.
Eastern Michigan @ Ball St... there are a bunch of routs forecasted where the point difference between a 25 and a 35 point blowout is pointless to quibble over, but in this case, we're going to point out that we see a six-point win for Ball St, and Vegas sees seventeen! They were closer - it was 15. So they lead us 4-1 now...
Maryland @ Michigan... We have the Terps by five, Vegas has Michigan by 4.5! We cheered Maryland's late TD for the win, 23-16!
Florida International @ North Texas...we think it'll be FIU by two; they see UNT by 2! They were on again! UNT 17, FIU 14!
"The Big Game"! Stanford @ California...the home of the greatest, most controversial play in college football history in 1982. We have Cal by 3 1/2, they have Stanford by 6. We were doubly afraid of this one, with all our Berkeley relations...but it was Leland Sanford Junior University with the 38-17 win. Vegas up 6-2 now.
Florida Atlantic @ Middle Tennessee...We see it as even; they have MTSU by 6 1/2! We're counting this one on our side - one is closer to "even" than it is to six! 35-34, Blue Raiders.
Oklahoma St @ Baylor...Another potential blowout, but our spreads differ significantly - we see Baylor by 11; they think the Bears will win by 27!  They'd have been spot on if Baylor wanted to run it up...49-28 in bad weather. 7-2, casinos.
Missouri @ Tennessee is the last game we'll compare - we have Mizzou by 1; they think the Volunteers win at home by 3 1/2. Missouri wins, 29-21, so we go into Sunday down four with four to go. Dormie at 7-3 down...

On the pro side, there are only four games to compare:
Cleveland @ Atlanta... We think Cleveland by 1; they see Atlanta by 3 1/2. And thanks to some terrible clock management, we were vindicated by the Browns' last-second field goal.
Cincinnati @ Houston...We think the Bengals win by 1; Vegas says Houston by 1 1/2. And the Bengals won comfortably. Two for two today - we still have a chance!
Arizona @ Seattle...We differ on the effect of the home field: Arizona by 2 on our board, Seattle by six on theirs!
Baltimore @ New Orleans  on Monday night...We call it even; they see the Saints with a 3 1/2 point advantage at home. Looks like it may wait until Monday night to determine whether we win or lose!

Our Week 11 experimental predictions! AND RESULTS!

Alright, we’ve put together what our tier system suggests the difference between two teams playing games this week should be. Now, we’re going to compare those to what the professionals in Las Vegas are posting as betting spreads. Remember, this is an exercise for amusement purposes only! Our numbers are NOT exact by any means, and the betting lines are as much a prediction of public perception as they are actual predictions about the games to come.
There are seventeen games in which the line differs from our numbers enough to overcome the margin of variation in our work; they’re marked in red like this. Let’s track those this week and see how we do - if the game lands on OUR side of the casino line, we'll count it a win! And in updating this post, we'll be adding in scores in purple, like this, so we can all keep track of how it went! (EDIT: Technical problems prevented upload of the updates of this blog entry Saturday.)

Akron @ Buffalo (Tues 6 pm MST) - MAC
Tiers R @ R means Buffalo by 3. Vegas picks Akron by 3. Score: Buffalo 55-24! FF 1, Vegas 0!
Toledo @ Northern Illinois (Tues 6 pm) - MAC
Tiers L @ I means NIU by 7. Score: NIU 27-24. No Vegas line, but we hit that one pretty close!
Ball St @ U Mass (Wed 6 pm) - MAC
Tiers R @ T means an EVEN game. Vegas picks Massachusetts by 3. UMass won by two touchdowns (24-10, but they had mirror image drives for the first 20 minutes or so! It looked so promising for us!), so point, Vegas. FF 1, Vegas 1.
Kent St @ Bowling Green (Wed 6 pm) - MAC
Tiers U @ K- means BGSU by 17. Vegas says BGSU by 13. Bowling Green 30-20.
East Carolina @ Cincinnati (Thur 5 pm) - AAC
Tiers F @ I means ECU by 2. Vegas says by 1.  ECU won 54-46.
Southern Miss @ UTSA (Thur 6 pm) - CUSA
Tiers R- @ S means UTSA by 2. Vegas picks them by 9. UTSA won 12-10...by TWO! We lead, 2-1! (Extra credit for nailing the spread exactly?)
Cal-Berkeley @ Southern Cal (Thur 7 pm) - PAC
Tiers G @ C- means USC by 8. Vegas picks them by 14 ½. This could be a fascinating game! Depending on conditions and the way they choose to play it, the score might be 20-17…or 120-117! USC ends up winning by exactly 8! Cal made it close after a 31-2 first 27 minutes to make us look brilliant, and now it's FF 3, plus two Bingos, Vegas 1!
Tulsa @ Central Florida (Fri 6 pm) - AAC
Tiers T @ L means UCF by 15. Vegas says it’s by 18. And UCF said it would be 24, winning 31-7.
Iowa @ Illinois (Sat 10 am MST) – Big 10
            Tiers H @ N means Iowa by 6. Vegas says 5 ½. Iowa win 30-14.
South Carolina @ Florida (Sat 10 am) – SEC
Tiers G @ F- means Florida by 4. Vegas says FLA by 6. Which USC shows up? Can Florida win without that modern invention of “throwing the ball”? Stay tuned!  And thanks to a  blocked FG under 4 min to go, a blocked punt under a minute, and a "dribble-touchdown" by the Gamecocks with 12 seconds to go, USC got into overtime and won there, 23-20. Head Ball Coach Magic!
Army @ Western Kentucky (Sat 10 am)
Tiers R @ S means WKU by 1. Vegas says the spread is 10 ½! We lost this one: WKU won 52-24, so now it's FF 3, Vegas 2.
Ohio St @ Minnesota (Sat 10 am) – Big 10
Tiers B+ @ E means OSU by 3. Vegas favors them by 12. The pieces are all there: OSU just had a huge prime time win over the Spartans, and they could very well overlook the Gophers the way they overlooked the Hokies! Even though the chart says Buckeyes, we’re thinking Gophers! With the Gophers fighting back to within 7 (OSU won 31-24), we have to call this a draw. However...why did Jerry Kill kick the FG so early, with 1:23 to go, on second down? Why not try for the TD when you're inside the 20?
Temple @ Penn St (Sat 10 am)
Tiers K @ H means Penn St by 7. Vegas picks them by 9. That is, assuming either teams scores seven points… PSU did: Nittany Lions won 30-13.
Clemson @ Georgia Tech (Sat 10 am) – ACC
Tiers E @ D means GT by 5. Vegas says it'll be Clemson by 3! The Ramblin’ Wreck is on a ramblin’ roll and could very well steamroll the Tigers at home; we’re kinda partial to GT anyway, but our hunch is to disagree with the “system”… AND they rolled, all right: Georgia Tech 28, Clemson 6. Back-up Clemson QB Cole Standt completed six of his 11 passes: three to Clemson players, three to Yellowjackets! (His one TD went the wrong way, too.) FF 4, Vegas 2!
Virginia Tech @ Duke (Sat 10 am) – ACC
Tiers D+ @ K means Duke by 8. Vegas says 7. We were both wrong. Va-Tech upsets the Blue Devils (strange sentence to write!), 17-16. So much for Duke's faint playoff hopes...
Pitt @ North Carolina (Sat 10:30 am) – ACC
Tiers J @ J means UNC by 3. Vegas says 2. Carolina won a great back-n-forth game by five, 40-35.
Miami-OH @ Central Michigan (Sat 11 am) – MAC
Tiers T @ M means CMU by 14. Vegas lists the spread as 15. CMU by 7, 34-27.
Nevada @ Air Force (Sat noon) – MW
Tiers J @ H means AFA by 6. Vegas says it's more like 2 1/2. It took overtime for Air Force to win by 7...and we always think that should count as a "win by zero", personally.
Eastern Michigan @ Western Michigan (Sat noon) – MAC
Tiers T @ M means WMU by 14. Vegas favors Western by 25 ½. And we both underestimated: 51-7. So, point Vegas...FF 4, Vegas 3.
Rice @ Marshall (Sat 12:30 pm) – CUSA
Tiers M @ E means Marshall by 15. The pro spread is 20. Final score 41-14, Thundering Herd. (They almost ended the night as the ONLY unbeaten...)
Wake Forest @ North Carolina St (Sat 1 pm) – ACC
            Tiers Q @ J means NCSU by 14. Vegas agrees (well, 13 ½). Wolfpack 42-13.
Texas Christian @ Kansas (Sat 1 pm) – Big 12
Tiers A @ Q means TCU by 21. Vegas goes up to 27, but we’ll say close enough. In the best "almost-upset" of the year, TCU had to come from behind in the second half and won by four, 34-30. Good on ya, Jayhawks! That was more impressive than your actual win last week! Would it have been appropriate or understandable for the fans to storm the field after a close loss to the #4 team, given Kansas' history?
Appalachian St @ Arkansas St (Sat 1 pm) – Sun Belt
Tiers R+ @ M means Ark St by 9. Vegas says it’ll be 14. UPSET, App St! 37-32!
Indiana @ Rutgers (Sat 1:30 pm) – Big 10
Tiers P @ I means Rutgers by 13. Vegas argues it’ll only be a 7 point game. And WE WIN this one: 45-23, Scarlet Knights! FF 5, Vegas 3!
Mississippi St @ Alabama (Sat 1:30 pm) – SEC
Tiers A @ A means ‘Bama by 3. Vegas picks the Tide by 7. This is IT! This is the game of the season, in our opinion. Finish your chores, get your snacks and beverages ready, and settle in. The two best teams in the country: Nick Saban and the unbeatable multiple champion Crimson Tide host the upstarts from Mississippi, where nothing ever goes right…except THIS year, this “sold their soul to the devil” year. Our greatest wish is that the game lives up to the billing! A game that lived up to its billing. Would the "fumble" at the goal line the officials originally gave to MSU (correctly, it seemed to us) really have made the TD swing that would have prevented a 25-20 Bulldog loss? Impossible to tell, but Mississippi St won't drop out of Tier A on our ranking because they lost by the expected spread on the home field of another Tier A team! As for the oddsmakers, 5 points splits the difference - call it a draw.
Georgia Southern @ Navy (Sat 1:30 pm)
Tiers K @ L means Navy by 1. Vegas stretches that to 3 ½. Navy stretches it to 33 (52-19).
Memphis @ Tulane (Sat 1:30 pm) – AAC
Tiers J @ Q means Memphis by 8. Vegas makes it 10. Memphis made it 31.
Nebraska @ Wisconsin (Sat 1:30 pm) – Big 10
Tiers B @ D means an EVEN game. Wisconsin’s a 6 point favorite in Nevada. And brother, were they right! We'll post about Melvin Gordon's day elsewhere today, but 408 rushing yards in three quarters is as eye opening as it gets. We wish they'd left him in there to hit five hundred...the 59-24 annihilation of the Huskers makes it FF 5, Vegas 4.
Northwestern @ Notre Dame (Sat 1:30 pm)
Tiers N @ B means ND by 21. It’s 16 ½ in Vegas’ eyes. Notre Dame found an impressive way to give the game away yesterday. A first quarter blocked XP run back for two, the decision to make that up too early by Coach Kelly, the 4-to-go TD w/ 2-pt conversion, last second 47 yard FG and game winning 41 yard FG by a kicker who'd never kicked a thirty-yarder before yesterday...Amazing. 43-40, NU.
Middle Tennessee @ Florida International (Sat 1:30 pm) – CUSA
Tiers O- @ R means MTSU by 2. Vegas favors them by 4. MTSU 38-28.
Oklahoma @ Texas Tech (Sat 1:30 pm) – Big 12
Tiers E @ N means OU by 10. Vegas picks the Sooners by 14. Sooners split the difference, 42-30.
Washington @ Arizona (Sat 1:30 pm) – PAC
Tiers H- @ C means Arizona by 11. The difference is 8 ½ in Vegas. It was "one" on the field, 27-26, and "won" on the sideline, when our favorite coach, Chris Petersen, tried to ice the kicker but instead cancelled out the game-losing FG by Arizona, who then made the second chance to win it. Heartbreaking for UW - they deserved to win the game.
New Mexico @ Utah St (Sat 2 pm) – MW
Tiers S+ @ G- means USU by 19. Vegas says 16. The Aggies barely hung on, 28-21.
Kentucky @ Tennessee (Sat 2 pm) – SEC
Tiers G @ I means an EVEN game. The spread in Vegas is Tennessee by 7 ½! One of a half-dozen pick’em games this weekend in our eyes, some being traditional rivalries like this one. We lean towards UK. We just have too much faith in the Wildcats. Early season form has failed to hold - 50-16, UT. Vegas 5, FF 5.
Hawaii @ San Jose St (Sat 2:30 pm) – MW
Tiers S @ P- means SJSU by 7. Vegas says the spread is 10. Amazingly, the Warriors shut out an opponent on the road, 13-0! Poor Spartans have fallen on hard times, too.
Troy @ Idaho (Sat 3 pm) – Sun Belt
Tiers T @ U means Idaho by 1. Vegas says the Vandals by 5. Should've known. Given a home game they should win, the Vandals folded like a bedsheet: awkwardly and crumpled. 34-17, Trojans.
Utah @ Stanford (Sat 4 pm) – PAC
Tiers D @ H means Utah by 3. Vegas takes Stanford by 7! Utah wins a game that went to OT just 7-7, scoring a TD in the second OT to win 20-17. FF 6, Vegas 5, just barely.
Louisiana-Lafayette @ Louisiana-Monroe (Sat 5 pm) – Sun Belt
            Tiers L @ P- means Lafayette by 4. Vegas picks them by 7 ½. Lafayette 34-27,
Nevada-Las Vegas @ Brigham Young (Sat 5 pm)
Tiers S @ L means BYU by 14. Vegas gives the Cougars a 24 point gap! Split the difference: 19 points, 42-23, although UNLV gave them a great battle in the first half. Call it a draw.
Auburn @ Georgia (Sat 5:15 pm) – SEC
Tiers B @ C means Georgia by 1. Casinos are pitching 2 ½ points. Once again, Georgia demonstrates how overpowering they can be, walloping top-level Auburn 34-7.
Texas St @ South Alabama (Sat 5:30 pm) – Sun Belt
Tiers O @ Q means an EVEN game. Vegas chooses Texas St by 4. And South Alabama won, 24-20!  Make it 7-5, FF!
Texas @ Oklahoma St (Sat 5:30 pm) – Big 12
Tiers I @ G means an EVEN game. Vegas recommends Texas by 2. Glad this wasn't one we'd "bet" on - the Longhorns looked lethal last night, winning 28-7. Impressive victory for Charlie Strong.
Missouri @ Texas A&M (Sat 5:30 pm) – SEC
Tiers D @ F means an EVEN game. Vegas says A&M by 5 ½. (Really?) Sorry, Pastor, but we were right: although the Aggies led much of the first half, the Tigers had much more to play for: 34-27. Mizzou. FF 8, Vegas 5.
LSU @ Arkansas (Sat 6 pm) – SEC
Tiers C @ H means LSU by 5. Vegas chooses Arkansas by 2 ½! And they were right. The Razorbacks managed to shut out LSU 17-0. Point, Vegas: 8-6, FF.
Florida St @ Miami-FL (Sat 6 pm)
Tiers A @ F means FSU by 5. Or take 2 ½, according to Nevada oddsmakers. Hard to see the Hurricanes staying that close, but for Winston to keep up his last-moment savior rep, s’pose that’s the way it’ll have to be! Great game for Al Golden, Duke Johnson, and the Hurricanes, but it seems that was necessary for the "Jamies Magic" to save the day, 30-26. Amazing. No one wants to call them #1, but the defending champs are still undefeated, and would you really want to bet against them if they somehow still have number 5 behind center?
South Florida @ Southern Methodist (Sat 6 pm) – AAC
Tiers P @ U- means USF by 7. Vegas says the spread is 10. ONLY SMU could lose a game like this! More about this game in another post, but after being shut out for 3 1/2 quarters, the Bulls went on a six-minute, game-ending, 21 play drive (you read that right: twenty-one plays!) that included three successful fourth down conversions and ended in a touchdown pass (on fourth down, of course) to win the game, 14-13. Glad the Mustangs showed some life, but HOLY CATFISH! What a way to lose the game!
Michigan St @ Maryland (Sat 6 pm) – Big 10
Tiers C+ @ F means Michigan St by 2. Vegas chooses the Spartans by 11! And they were half right - Spartans by 22, 37-15. Point Vegas, but it's too late: FOLLOWING FOOTBALL 8, VEGAS 7! Huzzah! Three cheers for a meaningless victory for us!
North Texas @ Texas-El Paso (Sat 8 pm) – CUSA
Tiers R @ M means UTEP by 10. The line is 6 ½ in Las Vegas.  We were closer, for what it's worth: 35-17, Miners by 18.
San Diego St @ Boise St (Sat 8:15 pm) – MW
Tiers N @ G- means BSU by 13. It’s 14 in Vegas. SDSU is a tough out for the Broncos, and it showed again last night: it took four quarters for Boise to pull out a 37-29 victory.
Arizona St @ Oregon St (Sat 8:45 pm) – PAC
Tiers B @ J means ASU by 7. The line is 9 in Las Vegas. The Pac-12 has to rest its hopes on the Ducks now, as the Sun Devils fell after midnight last night, 35-27, to a very good OSU team that's completely capable of ruining Oregon's season in the Civil War in two weeks, too!

So, if you're keeping track, of the fifteen games that our predictions differed significantly enough from Vegas that we'd have been interested in wagering on the games, we were on the winning side of the margin 8 out of 15 times, with three draws. (If we'd have bet those, we'd have won, but our game here was who was closer with their prediction, not were we on the winning side.) Going back through all fifty games, if we'd simply bet a dollar on the spread of every one of those fifty games given how our tier-tracker predicted, we'd have won four bucks - we went 27 and 23. Again, do NOT use our forecasts for gambling purposes. But it's fun to track, and it gives us a better idea when we're watching a true upset in the making! Thanks for playing along!
