College football rankings following Week 10 - FBS

Here are the updated Following Football ACNC tiers and rankings for the FBS teams following the games of November 3-7...Alabama takes over the #1 spot, despite their early season loss to Mississippi State - and if that's a problem for you, ask yourself what the betting odds would look like were they to play any of the undefeated teams on a neutral field! (They were 6 1/2 point favorites against #1 LSU Saturday - and justified it in spades!). In fact, three of our four playoff teams have a loss, but more important is how you're playing NOW. Big movers include OU, moving up from #9; Stanford (#11 to #5), North Carolina (from #28 to #21); falling somewhat were LSU (just to #7) and TCU (to #13).

Notice that we've now ranked ALL 128 teams, all the way down to our Bottom Eight, with Eastern Michigan at the very bottom, losing to almost-equally pathetic Miami of Ohio.

Prophecies, part two...

Here are the college football PROPHECIES for All Hallow’s Eve …

BIG GAMES in the FBS) There are five by our count:

Florida v Georgia (+2.5) – the World’s Largest Cocktail party is more important than usual, because it will have a HUGE impact on which team carries the olive at the end of the year! Florida’s 4-1, Georgia’s 3-2. Everyone else has three losses in conference. When Florida wins and covers, they’ll have a berth in the SEC title game all but wrapped up!

North Carolina @ Pitt (+3) – Two of the three undefeateds in conference play in the ACC Atlantic division, along with Duke. The winner here has a clear leg up, and we see Pitt pulling the upset, as three of our metrics (including our own Following Football tier system) agree.

Stanford @ Washington St (+13.5) – If Wazzu wins, they’re tied with the Cardinal and have the tiebreaker. WHEN Stanford wins by LESS than 13.5, they’ll have two games clear on the field and the Pac-12 North sewn up.

Notre Dame @ Temple (+9) – on a dare, we’ll take Temple to keep it closer than nine. Call it motivation. IF the Rockets should win, expect a vault up the rankings for not just them but all four AAC undefeateds.

Louisiana Tech @ Rice (+13) – for control of Conference USA West (along with Southern Miss, each has just one loss). The point spread is too close to call, but LaTech should indeed win by about two touchdowns.

BIG GAMES in the FCS) We see six of them that could possibly decide conference titles:

Dartmouth @ Harvard – This is the BIGGEST one! Both ranked top ten, Harvard’s been on top for years but Big Green’s been gaining…and now, the Dartmouth Defense thinks it can stop the high-powered Crimson offense. They’re wrong. Harvard by 10+ points. (Remember, there are no Vegas spreads in the FCS, so we create our own.)

Jacksonville @ Dayton – the two “least weak” teams in the Pioneer League pillow fight it out! If Dayton wins, they’ll stay unbeaten and have wins over their two biggest threats, J-ville and San Diego. If they lose, well, it’s a four-way tie at the top. At Dayton, we’ll take the Flyers to win, and that’s as much as we can ask. Gonna be a close game!

Colgate @ Fordham – very similar to its cousin in the Ivy League, the Patriot League also pairs its two remaining unbeaten this week in a showdown essentially for the title. Fordham’s been dominant all season long – we’ll call them 10+ point winners here, too.

Eastern KY @ Jacksonville St – Along with Eastern Illinois (whom JSU plays next week), two of the three unbeaten play their round-robin starting this week. If JSU can handle Auburn into a second overtime, they can sure handle EKU by a touchdown or more.

James Madison @ William & Mary – A week ago, this might have been a classic…now, with JMU’s QB out for the season, it’s the Cowboys all over again: William & Mary wins comfortably.

Coastal Carolina @ Charleston Southern – CSU’s won five in a row, and sits 3-0 in conference. Coastal is 7-0, ranked first in some polls, and obviously also unbeaten in conference. Saturday, they meet for the Big South title, for all intents and purposes. We’ll take the visitors, as tempting as it is to take the home crowd and all. Coastal’s got it all rolling this year.

OK…here are the other games of interest throughout the nation this weekend, and our picks on most of them:
Michigan @ Minnesota (+13.5) – With Jerry Kill’s retirement today, here’s betting the Gophers play their hearts out for him Saturday. Gophers cover.
Oklahoma St @ Texas Tech (+3) – OSU should be able to handle the Red Raiders fairly comfortably. Cowboys cover.
West Virginia @ TCU (-14) Thursday night – Something says this game will be closer than we think. All the metrics say 9-13 points, and the injuries are starting to catch up to both TCU and Baylor, and we think the title will head north into the state of OK somewhere…
USC @ Cal-Berkeley (+6) – They felt embarrassed at UCLA; they will NOT be embarrassed to the rich kids! Cal covers the six points.
Oregon @ Arizona St (-2) Thursday night – If you think the Sun Devils are going to win, might as well take the two points as well! Odds of a one point win are slim…
Ole Miss @ Auburn (+7) – Only interesting because it’s an SEC West battle, and all seven teams there are amazing. We like Auburn to keep it close.
South Florida @ Navy (-7.5) – there’s a LOT more than a touchdown between these teams. Navy by double that.
Florida International @ Florida Atlantic (+3.5) – bonus points if you can name what city either team is located in! (Neither can we.) FIU is decent; the Owls are not. FIU despite the points.
San Diego St @ Colorado St (+4.5) – We started the season saying that the entire Mountain division was better than the West, and that any of the best four teams (AF, CSU, USU, and Boise) could win the West easily. If that’s still true, the Rams win this game outright, even if the Aztecs are the class of the West (and they are!).
Idaho @ New Mexico St (+4.5) – Two rivalry games to finish this section: the Vandals and the Aggies had to roam the wastelands together when the WAC gave up football and no one else would take them. (Remember the season – 2010? – when the proposal was twelve games of Idaho v NMSU, six at each school?) What would you think about Idaho winning three in a row? (They hadn’t won two straight since 2011.) Take the Vandals to win by more than 5.
Louisiana Monroe @ Louisiana-Lafayette (-11.5) – The latter school tries to just call itself “Louisiana” now, but it seems a shame to kill the connection betwixt the schools. Like FIU changing to “The International” or something. But this line seems like it’s about right – no pick ATS from us; just confirmation that ULL should win by 11 or so.

AND, here are some of the interesting games in the FCS this weekend…
Indiana St @ Illinois St (no Vegas lines, of course) – Take Illinois St by at least 17 points.
Weber St @ Eastern Washington – EWU by 15+ “on the red”.
Montana @ Portland St – Sorry, Mr. Clixby and Grandpa Mike…Portland St by at least seven.
Maine @ Villanova – The Wildcats are better than everyone else except the top three in the Colonial… Villanova by 7+.
Monmouth @ Kennesaw St – The newcomers are 6-2, albeit against flimsy competition, but that’s fine for a team playing its first year of football EVER! However, we think Monmouth will win this one.
Western Carolina @ Chattanooga – almost put this in the BIG game section, but I don’t see WCU challenging Chattanooga, who should win by 13 or more.
Furman @ Samford – hate picking Southern Conference games! They always seem to go sideways on us! But we’ll try taking Samford by, say, at least five here…
Wofford @ VMI – …and Wofford by a TD or more over the team that won its first road conference game in three years last week!
Butler @ Marist – Close in every metric we use, but Marist comes out on top in every metric, too. Marist by 3.
Sacred Heart @ St. Francis-PA – St. Francis should hold on to this one at home.
Pennsylvania @ Brown – The undercard to Dartmouth/Harvard in the Ivy League this week should see Brown win a close one.
Alcorn St @ Southern – the two division champs from last year in the SWAC meet, and we’ll take a narrow Jaguar victory for Southern.
Alabama State v Alabama A&M meet in a neutral site game in Birmingham, and we’ll take State by three.
Norfolk St @ NC Central – two closely matched MEAC teams, with NCC destined to win by three.
Last but certainly least, Savannah St @ Howard, a matchup of two of the worst HBC teams of 2015 (or most any other year), and we’re of course obliged to pick against Savannah State, selecting Howard to win by six!

Do we need to give you our picks for ALL the other games? Sigh… All right… Hang on…

Take VT (-2.5) over BC, Clemson (-10) over NCState, Louisville (-12) over Wake, GT (-5.5) over UVA, Iowa (-17) over Maryland, Purdue (+10.5) covers over Nebraska, Wisc (-19) over Rutgers, Texas (-7) over Iowa St, Utah (-23.5 and still mad) over OSU, UCLA (-20.5) over Colorado, Tenn (-7.5) over KY, Tx A&M (-15) over SoCarolina, Arkansas by 25 over UT-Martin (no line), Houston (-13) over Vandy, UCF (+25) covers over Cincy, Tulsa (-3) over SMU, Marshall (-20) over Charlotte, WKU (-23) over ODU, NoTexas (+9.5) covers over UTSA, UTEP (+22.5) covers against USM, all the favorites in the MAC cover, Air Force (-7.5) covers against Hawaii, Boise (-20) covers at UNLV, USU (-24) over Wyoming, App St (-23) over Troy, and GASO (-21) over Texas St. Lots of favorites covering this week. If we didn’t name the game, we’re not picking a side against the spread, but we like the favorite to win.

In the FCS… winners in the MVC will be SDSU, NDSU, Northern Iowa and Western Illinois; in the Big Sky, we like SUU, MSU, Northern Arizona; in the Colonial, we’ll take Richmond, New Hampshire, Towson, and Stony Brook; in the Southland, we like McNeese, Central Ark, Lamar, NW St, SHSU and SFA; Presbyterian in the Big South; ETU and Citadel in the Southern; Duquesne, CCSU in the NEC; Tenn St, EIU, and SEMO in the Ohio Valley; Campbell, San Diego, and Drake in the Pioneer; Yale and Princeton in the Ivy; Bucknell and Lehigh and HC in the Patriot; BCU, NCAT, and SC State in the MEAC; and JSU and Prairie View in the SWAC.

Happy trails!

PROPHECIES in PHOOTBALL for the 1st Weekend of September, 2015

It's finally here! The first slate of American football games hits the airwaves tomorrow night, and from here until January we'll have solid football available to us every five-day weekend (and even a few Tuesdays and Wednesdays in November, thanks to the MAC)! We'll keep track of our projections and predictions so you can keep us honest, just like we have for Aussie footy (138-50 so far this season straight up, 110-78 against the spread) and Canadian football (23-19 so far, in a season where the oddsmakers themselves are under .500!). Alas, we're already zero-and-one in college football, having forecast the defending champions to win in Missoula last weekend, when the Grizzlies came from behind in the last seconds to win. While we were personally happy to see UM victorious...it still goes in our loss column. Luckily, we NEVER bet money, and we don't recommend you use our prognostications to bet money, either! Gambling is an addiction for too many people, and if you're one of those for whom it becomes a slippery slope, don't even touch the betting window. These predictions are for entertainment purposes only.

Let's get the internationals out of the way first...

AFL) The three matches of interest are Richmond over North Melbourne (by more than the 7.5 spread); Adelaide over Geelong (by more than the 12.5 spread), and Port Adelaide over Fremantle, although I wouldn't bet on Freo's outcome this week as they've publicly said they're resting everyone of import this round with first place locked up. In other news, Hawthorn may not cover the 87 point difference our ratings have them over Carlton, but they'll win with their eyes closed; Sydney wins with ease over Gold Coast and West Coast over St. Kilda, but neither by the 50.5 spread. Western, Collingwood, and GWS will all win and cover against Brisbane, Essendon, and Melbourne.

CFL) The headline matches take place on Labor Day Monday, when we predict Hamilton over Toronto by 13 and Calgary over Edmonton by 6, which would place both winning teams firmly in control of their divisions with eight games to go in the season. On the undercard, we see Montreal hosting and beating BC by five, and Saskatchewan getting its first win, inspired by the fresh new coach, defeating Winnipeg by one.

As for the NFL) You're kidding, right? Talk to us next week.

NCAA) HERE WE GO!!!! There are FOUR tier I versus tier I games (using last year's rankings as a starting point) in the very first week ("Week Zero", but 126 of the 128 FBS teams play this weekend!). We see...

Alabama over Wisconsin (by more than the 10 point spread); Texas A&M over Arizona St (by more than 3), Auburn over Louisville on Sunday (and beating the 10.5 points), and Ohio St annihilating poor Virginia Tech on Monday night by more than the 11 point Vegas line, and probably more than the 22 point Sagarin rating difference as well, no matter who plays QB.

There are TEN other games in our list of "featured" matchups this weekend, all involving two top-notch teams. Here's our thoughts on them:

North Carolina will UPSET South Carolina, despite the 2.5 spread the other way.
Utah should edge Michigan, but not by 5.5 points - maybe a field goal?
TCU is favored by 14 over Minnesota, but we see the Gophers much more competitive than that.
Boise St's 11.5 spread over Washington, coached by former BSU boss Chris Petersen, is too high.
Notre Dame, on the other hand, will handle Texas by 10+ points, going away.
UCLA / Virginia will be over in the Bruins' favor by halftime; give the points.
BYU might not beat Nebraska, but they'll be closer than six.
Stanford, au contraire, wipes out Pat Fitzgerald's dreams at Northwestern, twelve points be hanged.
Temple should stay right with Penn State and at least beat the six point spread.
And finally, on Sunday, Marshall plays its second toughest opponent of the year - lowly Purdue - and wins by more than a TD; more likely four. That's why even 12-0 won't be enough for the Herd.

Next, we're going to look at ELEVEN of the more "interesting" match-ups farther down the food chain in Division I. There are some games where it may look like a bodybag game, but watch out, home favorite!

Georgia Southern is NOT a twenty point 'dog to West Virginia. I'm considering taking them straight up...Western Kentucky has actually moved to become a half-point favorite over Vanderbilt, and in fact they'll wipe the Commodores up by two TDs...UL-Lafayette went to a bowl game last year, and Kentucky didn't smell one. So why is UK a seventeen point fave?...Central Michigan won't upset Oklahoma, but they'll be more competitive than the Sooners want for an opener!...Same with Arkansas St at drunk frat party U (whoops) SC, who're too busy examining the ramifications of its off field issues to pay attention to the fact that ASU's got the same head coach for the first time in five years and will get out of the gates HOT this year...Eastern Washington, on the other hand, is in for a shellacking at the hands of their former QB and the Oregon Ducks....Finally in this category, is Hawaii an underdog to Colorado? Should anyone be an underdog to Colorado? Still, we're taking the Buffalo, because Hawaii's just that messed up.

Elsewhere, there's a fascinating bottom-of-the-ladder game where last year's Bottom Six champ, Georgia State, is actually favored against brand new FBS team Charlotte (by a TD). But even below THAT, two FBS teams play Saturday that have never played FOOTBALL before! East Tennessee St and Kennesaw St open up against each other, and someone's going to win their first game of football EVER (and the other team will probably go 0-12)...Also in the FBS, Chattanooga / Jacksonville State should be a great match-up; we're taking the Southern Conference champs over the Ohio Valley this go-round. Finally, our favorite team in the world opens their 2015 campaign in Fort Collins, Colorado: Savannah State should be a good bet to beat the Sagarin rating spread of 60+ points against Mountain West team Colorado State. But they won't...

Three games start the CONFERENCE slates this weekend - Montana has the chance to not only be the first 1-0 team in the country (which they are, as far as D1 is concerned), but also the first D1 team to be 1-0 in conference as well, and they should win over Cal Poly SLO in the Big Sky...In the SWAC, Prairie View A&M should beat Texas Southern,  and the Southland season opens with Southeast Louisiana and Northwestern St. (betting the former to win on the road.)

There's a long list of much less interesting fodder, which we'll note without comment except to say that bold (and listed first) tells you who we think will WIN the game outright; and we're underlining the team who we favor against either the odds or the Sagarin rating spread (for games involving FCS teams, which Vegas doesn't post odds for).

Power Five conference team games: Boston College over Maine, Clemson over Wofford, Florida St over Texas St, North Carolina St over Troy, Syracuse over Rhode Island, Wake Forest over Elon, Duke over Tulsa, Georgia Tech over Alcorn St, Miami-FL over Bethune-Cookman, Richmond upsetting Maryland (!), Michigan St over Western Michigan, Rutgers over Norfolk St, Illinois over Kent St, Baylor by 70 over SMU, Oklahoma over Akron (not by 70, though), Okla St barely over Central Michigan, Cal over Grambling, Oregon St over Weber St, Washington St over Portland St, Arizona over UTSA, Florida over NMSU, Georgia over UL-Monroe, Missouri over SE Missouri St, Ole Miss over UT-Martin.

Group of Five conference team games: Cincinnati over Alabama A&M, East Carolina over Towson, UCF over FIU, USF over Florida A&M, Houston over Tennessee Tech, Memphis over Missouri St, Navy over Colgate, FAU over Tulsa?, MTSU over Jackson St, Old Dominion over Eastern Michigan, LA Tech over Southern, Rice over Wagner, Buffalo over Albany, Miami-OH may actually win a game playing Presbyterian!, Ohio over Idaho, Ball St over VMI, Northern Illinois will wipe out UNLV, Toledo over Stony Brook, Fresno St should beat Abilene Christian by 14+, Nevada over UC Davis, San Diego St has too big a spread to cover against crosstown San Diego of the Pioneer League, Air Force over Morgan State, New Mexico over Mississippi Valley St, Utah St should cover against Southern Utah, Wyoming over North Dakota, Appalachian St all over Howard, and South Alabama over Gardner-Webb.

There are only 21 games in which FCS teams play each other, and we normally don't predict very many of those games. We will mention  a few, though, including our bet that Jacksonville does the weak sister Pioneer League proud and beats favored Delaware; that William & Mary can defeat Lefayette, that St. Francis-PA can handle Georgetown with ease, and that the student athletes from the military school The Citadel may get a chance to hone their obliteration skills against poor Davidson, owners of the worst Sagarin rating in Division 1.

(And there are eighteen games where an FCS team dips down into Division II to open the season. Ask me if I care.)

How do you maintain rivalries in an era of bloated conferences?

This also comes from Dr. Saturday, and it's a direct result of the ridiculous size of the conferences in college football today. The ACC, for reference, now has fourteen teams in two divisions, which means that teams in the opposite division (even longtime rivals who have been split apart) play each other at most every OTHER year, so they come to your campus every FOUR (or more?) years. Here's a novel solution for that from the state of North Carolina, right on the dividing line of the Atlantic Coast Conference...

North Carolina and Wake Forest, two ACC rivals, took an interesting approach to filling a slot in their non-conference schedules for 2019 and 2021.
Instead of looking outside the ACC, the two programs will square off in non-conference games – one at Wake Forest on September 14, 2019, and one at UNC on September 25, 2021. Because of the ACC’s scheduling arrangements, the two teams were not scheduled to play one another in those seasons. Now they will, but the game “will not factor into the ACC standings.”
“This is a unique opportunity to play a regional rival in years that fall outside the normal conference rotation,” UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham said. “We have a long history with Wake Forest that has historical value and will generate interest within our fans.”
According to a release from UNC, this home-and-home arrangement is “the first time two members of a Power Five conference have agreed to play each other in a football series originally scheduled as non-conference games.”
North Carolina and Wake Forest have a rivalry that spans more than 100 years. In 105 meetings, the Tar Heels lead the series 68-35-2. The two teams played one another every year from 1944-2004 but now play on an infrequent basis due to the rotating schedule (which is set through 2024) stemming from the conference’s expansion to 14 teams (UNC and Wake are in different divisions).
This agreement also satisfies the ACC’s requirement of each program scheduling at least one power five team in its non-conference slate.
The two programs will meet in conference matchups in 2015 and 2022
